Prince Alexander of Hesse and by Rhine was born in 1823 in Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany. He was the daughter of Grand Duchess Wilhelmine, the wife of Ludwig II, Grand Duke of Hesse. It was openly rumoured that he was not the child of the Grand Duke but that his father was actually August de Grancy, the Grand Duchess's chamberlain. However, he was recognized by the Grand Duke as his legitimate son.
Prince Alexander married Countess Julia von Hauke in 1851 in Breslau, Poland. He served in the Austrian army and later in Hesse's army.
He died in Jugenheim, in Rheinhessen, Hesse, in 1888.
